3 November at 19:00–21:00, SOAS University, Lucas Lecture Theatre (DLT)

Almost to the day of the 99th anniversary of the infamous Balfour Declaration of 1917, the SOAS Palestine Society, in collaboration with Olive, invites everybody to a talk by Tom Suarez on British colonialism and Zionist settler-colonialism in Palestine. As documented in his recently published book, State of Terror: How Terrorism Created Modern Israel, British officials and Zionist leaders colluded to lie about the scheme of expropriation and ethnic cleansing in Palestine from the very begining. Drawing from heretofore poorly tapped documents in the British archives, Suarez shows that Zionist terrorism during the several years preceding the UN Partition was so rampant that Resolution 181, which directly led to the establishment of the Israeli state, was itself enacted in fear of continuing Zionist terror. The British washed their hands of the catastrophe they helped create, leaving the Palestinians in the wake.

About State of Terror:

Tapping a trove of declassified British documents, much of which has never before been published, the book details a shocking campaign of Zionist terrorism in 1940s and 1950s Palestine that targeted anyone who challenged its settler-colonial goals, whether the British government, the indigenous Palestinians, or Jews. The book asserts that today’s so-called "conflict" is that terror campaign’s unfinished business, an Israeli state driven by unrequited territorial designs and the dream of ethnic ‘purity’. Suarez tells this story using the terrorists' own accounts in secret internal papers boasting of their successes, and quoting from contemporary intelligence briefings and secret diplomatic correspondence.

Venue: Lucas Lecture Theatre (DLT)

The event is free and open to all.
